Review on Chez Lindsay
Galettes and seafood are the stars of the show in Lindsay Wooton's sunny neighbourhood venue, Chez Lindsay, overlooking the Thames at the foot of Richmond Hill. For more than 20 years, she has been singing its praises, carefully sourcing many ingredients direct from Brittany and running the whole show as a labour of love.
Savoury galettes are made from nutty-flavoured organic buckwheat flour and cooked on a flat griddle. The classic egg, ham and cheese version is a perennial favourite (especially for brunch), but choices range from goats' cheese with spinach and salad to scallops with leeks. On the other hand, if you have a sweet tooth, indulge in one of Lindsay's luscious filled crêpes.
Fish is also there in abundance – whelks with aïoli, warm rock oysters and more elaborate 'grand plats' including grilled whole sea bass with mixed pepper butter or a gratin of Camembert, red snapper, prawns and crème fraîche. Carnivores are not ignored either: expect anything from that Breton favourite pork with apples and cider sauce to calf's liver with petit pois à la française or breast of duck with honey liqueur and sweet potato purée. Drink Breton cider, bière or one of the Loire wines from the predominantly Gallic list.
