Review on La Buvette
La Buvette is an independent, stand alone bistro in the centre of Richmond set in a pedestrian only area, serving French regional cooking in an informal atmosphere, a congenial fixture of the Richmond restaurant scene, La Buvette occupies a one-time refectory in the shadow of St Mary Magdalene church. It's a happy neighbourhood bolthole, with a big bay window and prints on its stone walls, plus a quiet walled courtyard for al fresco drinking and eating during the summer months. The surroundings are also ideally suited to functions and celebratory events, and the restaurant is much in demand as a venue for private dining, weddings and conferences.
The menu is staunchly 'French bistro', promising foie gras parfait with Madeira jelly, escargots de bourgogne, steak with frites and roast lamb fillet with paloise sauce. There are also a few more upbeat ideas such as pan-fried scallops with Jerusalem artichoke confit and wild mushrooms or roast Barbary duck breast with braised leg, turnip gratin and green olives. Seafood platters offer an array of delights, while desserts keep things straightforward with the likes of chocolate tart, crème brûlée and strawberry sorbet with framboise.
Set lunches are great value and the wine list knows its onions as regards good-value drinking from the French regions.
