Review on The Dining Room Restaurant
The Dining Room is set in a converted corner shop in the tiny village of Rock, across the Camel River from Padstow. Owners, local couple Fred Beedles and Donna Caswell are stamping their own personal imprint on things. Fred heads the kitchen, while Donna adeptly manages front of house with her friendly and attentive service team. The restaurant welcomes diners in a smart and intimate setting, with tables well laid with crisp linen and high backed brown leather chairs.
Fred has devised a modern British menu based on carefully sourced local produce and his dishes demonstrate a high level of skill, versatility and creativity. Expect starters of brioche crusted fillet of mackerel, pickled red onions, basil shoots or maybe slow cooked duck egg, confit duck leg, prunes and onion crumble. Main courses take in roasted breast of guinea fowl, tarragon ballotine, potato terrine, Chantenay carrots and Savoy cabbage or pan fried fillet of stone bass, smoked bacon, leeks, mussels served with a red wine sauce. There's tempting desserts to finish with a salted dark chocolate tart, caramel ice cream and roasted peanuts or baked egg custard, vanilla poached rhubarb and ginger crumble.
The food is supported by a carefully chosen wine list offering something for everyone in terms of both taste and budget. During warmer months there is a terrace for dining al fresco in this immensely likeable restaurant.
