Review on The Barn Hotel, Hawtrey's Restaurant
Originally an old farm building set in three acres of grounds within easy reach of the A40 and the M25, The Barn Hotel with its Hawtrey's Restaurant is now a fully fledged complex incorporating a conference centre, leisure, banqueting and function facilities.
Hawtrey's Restaurant occupies an impressive room that has been designed like a Jacobean baronial hall, complete with rich mahogany panelling, fine oil paintings and oak-hammer beams supporting an intricate coffered ceiling. It makes a suitably grand backdrop for food that is thoroughly modern in style.
Fixed-price menus are the order of the day during the week, with 'gastronomic' and tasting menus added at weekends. Dishes are deliberately intricate, with lots of components on the plate. Crab ravioli might appear with langoustine tails, pumpkin purée, toasted sesame seeds, pak choi and langoustine vinaigrette, while slow-cooked monkfish could be paired with caramelised cauliflower purée, baby leeks, hazelnut, chive and Jerez vinegar dressing.
Meat and game receive similar treatment, as in an assiette of veal fillet, sweetbread and cheek with vanilla mousseline and ceps, while desserts show real flair and creativity. The food is backed by a comprehensive wine list that is tilted towards the classic French regions but has plenty of support from the New World.
