Review on Anokaa
Anokaa's contemporary glass frontage is just a stone's throw from the Salisbury Playhouse and City Hall, making it a prime destination for business types and theatregoers. This is one of the new breed of Indian restaurants, with bold contemporary colour schemes, mirrored walls, fancy-looking plates and a menu that moves beyond curry house clichés.
Assorted homemade pickles and condiments set the ball rolling, before a raft of intriguing appetisers including stuffed, deep-fried zucchini flowers with asparagus raita, Gujarati pakoras, and grilled marinated monkfish with cumin and dried chilles. Rogan josh and chicken methi are familiar names among the main courses; otherwise look for roast sea bass with garlic-spiced spinach and sweet pepper sauce, Keralan-style king prawns or hara stuffed duck smoked over charcoal.
It's also worth checking out so-called 'innovative dishes' such as Mauritian-style grilled lobster served with Rajastani shingri beans. Vegetables and breads are equally interesting (look for date and ginger naan or parathas flavoured with pomegranate seeds). Lunches are impressively good value, and a magician entertains dinners at their tables on Thursday evenings.
