Review on La Fleur de Lys
David Shepherd and his team have been in Shaftesbury for a good while, and recently moved their well-known local restaurant to new premises in a converted girls' boarding house. La Fleur de Lys now offers accommodation and continues to feed folk with a regularly changing menu of traditional and modern food.
A few luxury ingredients pop up on the menu, which is rooted in the Anglo-French tradition. Veal sweetbreads are packed into a tartlet with wild mushrooms and served with green peppercorn sauce, lobster ravioli comes with a medley of shellfish and a Champagne sauce, while foie gras and truffles appear with fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef. There's generally something for vegetarians, and desserts could include peach crème brûlée with ginger biscuits or warm spiced apple tart.
To match the food, there's a lengthy international wine list with interesting monthly selections and some good bargains to be had. Take advantage of the charming courtyard garden when the weather allows.
