Review on The George Townhouse
High-flying Midlands' entrepreneur, Sue Hawkins, is the driving force behind this rejuvenated coaching inn. Formerly a run-down, town-centre boozer, the George is now a bright new boutique hotel and restaurant full of style and pizzazz.
The chic, contemporary restaurant has been given something of the feel of a gentlemen's club, with dark aubergine panelling, olive-green suede chairs, huge Louis XV mirrors and a piano that niftily opens to reveal drawers of cutlery. It's a suitable backdrop for food that has plenty of sunny modern flavours: warm lobster salad is served with sun-blush tomatoes and olives, scallops are presented on wilted pak choi, seared tuna comes with homemade tagliatelle. The daily blackboard menu concludes with desserts like bread-and-butter pudding made with pain au chocolat.
Food is also served right through the day in the traditional bar, where you can get top-notch real ales including beers from the Purity Brewing Company (an up-and-coming microbrewery based near Alcester) plus a menu that covers everything from breakfast and morning coffee with homemade cakes to tapas and evening nibbles.
