Review on The Clove Club
The Clove Club is a bar and restaurant set in the newly regenerated Shoreditch Town Hall, an Edwardian building built in 1904. This much anticipated launch is the latest venture from Young Turks chef Isaac McHale, Daniel Willis and Johnny Smith who were originally part of the team behind the successful Upstairs at the Ten Bells.
The venue comprises of two rooms, a restaurant with an open kitchen and a lively bar area, where you can enjoy informal dining from a menu based on sharing plates. The laid-back interiors have been designed by Mango London Architects, who have retained many of the buildings original Edwardian features. The tabletops have been constructed from reclaimed Georgian timber and Blacksmith Joe Morris has created the black steel frames for the tables. The original boxing spectator chairs from the assembly hall's former life are used in the bar area, and bentwood chairs feature in the restaurant area.
Ex Ledbury chef McHale serves a range of culinary delights in his five course menu, using carefully sourced and often overlooked ingredients and produce. Expect dishes along the lines of parsley and snails, house smoked cured duck and roast rib of Hereford beef, wild garlic aioli, while desserts take in warm cider and ginger mousse or blood orange, sheep's milk yoghurt and wild fennel. The Clove Club was the recipient of a coveted Michelin star in the 2015 restaurant Guide as well as three AA Rosettes.
