Review on Hix at The Tramshed
Legendary restaurateur Mark Hix's latest restaurant offering is The Tramshed in trendy Shoreditch, a cavernous building seating 150 diners. Formerly a famous Grade II listed electricity generating facility for the tramway system built in 1905, the building has undergone a major refurbishment and has been transformed into an urban industrial setting. There's exposed brick walls with steel girders soaring high in the roof, wooden tables simply laid, and a mezzanine floor offering private dining with views of the restaurant. Taking centre stage is the specially commissioned 'Cock and Bull' by Damien Hirst, featuring a preserved Hereford cow with a cockerel on its back, suspended from the ceiling in a steel and glass tank of formaldehyde. Another piece of his artwork called 'Beef and Chicken' taken from the characters of a 1990's cartoon is on display in the mezzanine area.
The concise menu focuses on chicken and beef dishes and Hix continues his strong allegiance to British produce with slow-reared chicken, exclusively reared for the restaurant from Woolley Park Farm, and beef dry aged in a Himalayan salt chamber from Peter Hannan's farm on the Glenarm Estate, Northern Ireland. There is one starter consisting of Yorkshire pudding with whipped chicken livers, cauliflower salad with shaved Berkswell and hazelnuts together with smoked Cornish mackerel with mixed beets and horseradish. Follow on with a whole chicken which comes speared on a roasting dish, with its claws still attached or for the squeamish amongst you the mighty-marbled Glenarm sirloin steak and chips might be more to your taste. Desserts home in on the classics with apple pie and custard or maybe a raspberry rippled cheesecake.
In the basement of the restaurant is the Cock 'n' Bull an art gallery which will feature different exhibitions every six weeks, as well as a curated library organised along topics of interest.
