Review on La Bodega Negra
La Bodega Negra in Soho is the latest venture from London restaurateur Will Ricker who has teamed up with New York nightclub owner and designer Serge Becker. The venue is uniquely situated between two streets, with the café and taqueria on one side in Moor Street and the restaurant on the other in Old Compton Street. You may struggle to locate the restaurant as there is no name on the building, rather a garish illuminated sign indicating a 'Peep Show Sex Shop' at the entrance. As first impressions count, it may not be the best dining destination for a first date or treating the parents to a meal, however delicious the food may be. The restaurant is located in a cavernous subterranean space which explains the name, La Bodega Negra means black cellar. Although not black, the place is moodily lit, with a sleek décor featuring dark wood and brown leather.
The menu includes traditional Mexican fare in the shape of sesame tostadas with guacamole and red snapper and prawn with tomato and coriander ceviche, alongside tacos filled with cochinita pibil pork, seared steak, and chorizo and potato. While desserts could encompass baked lemon cheesecake with caramelised lemon or pannacotta with hibiscus poached fruits. Backing up the food is a concise wine list together with reasonably priced zingy cocktails.
