Review on Social Eating House
Since leaving Gordon Ramsey's Maze, Jason Atherton has certainly hit the ground running, following his success with Michelin starred Pollen Street Social and Little Social in Mayfair, he has opened a third venture called Social Eating House, this time in trendy Soho a short walk from Oxford Street. Set over three floors, the interior has been designed by Russell Sage Studios featuring exposed brick walls, white washed copper ceilings and distressed leather banquette seating. The first floor bar called the Blind Pig has reclaimed wooden chairs and uses an antique mirrored ceiling to illuminate the low room. The basement is home to the hidden 'Employees Only' dining space with a stylish wrap-around bar seating fifteen guests.
Paul Hood having worked alongside Atherton for a number of years has been appointed Executive Chef of Social Eating House. Up-to-minute ideas and ingredients point up the modern menu, so expect ravioli of wild boar Bolognaise, Berkswell, peppered hearts and kidneys, followed by a main course of roast Cornish cod, kombu, chanterelles, baby gem, cockles and cream. Desserts offer an enticing mix of flavours with Szechuan and sea salt baked pineapple, lime and coconut or maybe lemon curd pie, peppered pastry crumble, sour yogurt sorbet and fennel. Tasty snacks are on offer in the bar area which has its own entrance, witness duck fat chips served with garlic aioli or opt for one of the jars such as smoked mackerel pate, and horseradish cream or salt cod brandad, potato chips, celery salt and vinegar and parsley oil.
Accompanying the menu is a well conceived wine list with plenty of choices by the glass, and their expert mixologist creates inventive cocktails. Jason Atherton picked up another Michelin star for Social Eating House in the prestigious 2014 Michelin Guide.
