Review on The Pipe of Port
You might think you have walked onto the set of a Charles Dickens drama when you step through the door and down the rickety stairs to this 'crusty' old wine bar with candles on mahogany tables and sawdust on the floor.
At lunchtime, food is limited to snacks, baguettes, jacket potatoes and the like, but there's plenty more going on in the evening. Pies are the stars of the show anything from chicken and chestnut to pork, plum and celery but the regularly changing menu has something to suit all tastes and palates: marinated herrings with Stilton dressing, breast of chicken with asparagus and cream sauce and specials like warm duck salad with soy and garlic salad, while puds are of the spotted dick and ginger cheesecake variety.
As you might expect, the cellar contains a fine selection of around 30 vintage ports, plus racks of pedigree French wines and more youthful bottles from the New World.
