Review on L'Etranger
'Glazed butterfish and pan-seared foie gras served with daikon pickle' gives a clue to the French-Asian complexion of the food at this chic Kensington restaurant, L'Etranger, which has been fashionably done out in shades of aubergine, lilac and grey. As befits the name, the menu is full of 'strange' ideas and unexpected East-West alliances.
Typically you might encounter lobster ravioli with a sauté of pom pom, nameko and shimeji mushrooms, miso-roasted duck breast with coriander butter asparagus, and desserts such as mango soufflé with yuzu and tofu sorbet. That said, there's also a smattering of classic favourites in the shape of caviar with crème fraîche and blinis, cep tart with black truffle cream, confit shoulder of Pyrenéan lamb with grilled aubergine and peppered Charolais steak with new potatoes fondant.
French veterans (especially from Burgundy) and New World youngbloods vie for attention on the deeply serious wine list. A discounted selection is offered at lunchtime and there are copious options by the glass.
