Review on Montparnasse
A beacon of good food and professionalism not far from Portsmouth's urban sprawl, Montparnasse (formerly Bistro Montparnasse) is entering a new era with the departure of long-serving chef/co-owner Kevin Bingham.
Enter new man at the stoves Nikolas Facey who worked at the Fat Olives, Emsworth and the Hambrough Hotel on the Isle of Wight. His fixed-priced menus are in the same vein as before, promising carefully crafted modern European dishes along the lines of goats' cheese mousse with salted pecan caramel and apple, fillet of sea bass with coconut beurre blanc and samphire and Gressingham duck breast with saffron polenta and chicory compote. To finish, you might find lemon thyme pannacotta with brioche ice cream and blueberry jam.
Inside, this pleasingly converted private house not far from the seafront looks much as before, with bright, breezy interiors and striking artwork hung on the walls.
