Review on The Refinery Bankside
A vast and sprawling bar-cum-restaurant just two minutes from the Tate Modern, the Refinery is housed in Southwark's iconic Blue Fin Building and spreads itself over two floors, with a mezzanine private dining area and a huge terrace with room for 120 people.
Inside, it's a contemporary mix of classic restaurant seating, secluded booths, high tables and acres of floor space - a great setting for an all-day, user-friendly menu with a strong Mediterranean accent. The kitchen cares about ingredients, and sources scrupulously from accredited ethical suppliers: 'from the land to the table' is its credo.
Sharing platters are a big hit, but the choice also extends to merguez sausages with rosemary potatoes, gourmet burgers, bowls of mussels in Franziskaner beer and an array of brasserie-style mains. American-style sandwiches are served through the day, there's a separate menu of 'bites' (polenta fries, min-fish 'n chips), not forgetting a standout weekend brunch. The wine list offers an eclectic selection from Europe and the New World, with UK vineyards also getting in on the act. An Enomatic preservation system ensures top quality by the glass.
