Review on Galvin La Chapelle
Chris and Jeff Galvin have notched up another Michelin star in their latest venture La Chapelle situated in Spitalfields, named in honour of the great Hermitage wine, La Chapelle, Galvin La Chapelle is the sister restaurant to Michelin starred Galvin at Windows and Bistrot de Luxe; the brothers certainly appear to have achieved another sure winner in the London restaurant scene. This beautiful 19th century building, St Botolph's Hall was originally a girl's school and has been transformed into a stunning fine dining restaurant and an all day café with outdoor seating. A bowler hatted gentleman will greet you in the impressive entrance before taking you into the restaurant, which is sensational with its spectacular vaulted ceiling, arched windows marble pillars, chandeliers and swagged curtains. There is also a mezzanine structure called The Gallery with private seating for up to twelve diners. This is a real family affair, with Chris and Jeff in the kitchen, another brother David sources the impeccable ingredients and Sara, Chris's wife oversees front of house.
The carefully crafted menu opens with starters like Escabèche of yellow fin tuna, aubergine caviar and coriander or lasagne of Dorset crab, velouté of chanterelle mushrooms. Main courses follow with dishes of exceptional taste and quality such as breast of Landaise chicken, potage of leeks and foie gras, truffle and parmesan gnocchi or roast saddle of Denham Estate venison, red cabbage, apple and chestnut purée, blackcurrant sauce. Desserts are equally inviting ideas, try the chilled Valrhona chocolate fondant, banana yoghurt ice cream and honeycomb or an apricot soufflé and chocolate sorbet. There is a superb cheese trolley which is accompanied with country bread, grapes and celery. The wine list is exceptional and includes a 1961 Hermitage La Chapelle at a staggering £19,500, but one might be pleased to know that there are plenty of more reasonable offerings and a good choice by the glass or carafe.
