Review on Alba Restaurant
Housed in the old lifeboat building on St Ives wharf, Alba now spreads itself over two tastefully refurbished floors: fine harbour views are the big attraction upstairs (although the displays of local art are also worth a look).
Local seafood gets a good airing on the wide-ranging modern menu. Salt-and-pepper squid with cucumber salad and Vietnamese dressing might precede monkfish cassoulet with chorizo, pancetta and haricots blancs or grilled plaice with soy and ginger butter sauce. Alternatively, meat fans could opt for a salad of smoked duck breast with celery, walnut and apples followed by pan-fried fillet of Cornish beef with mushrooms, thyme and red wine reduction.
To finish, go for broke with the four-part 'chocolate taster plate' or try passion fruit tart with toasted coconut ice cream and passion fruit syrup. Set lunch and early-evening menus are good deals and the global wine list includes numerous options by the glass.
