Review on Le Caprice
Synonymous with glitz since it opened in its present form more than 20 years ago, Le Caprice still manages to look the part, with its timeless elegant black-and-white décor, famous David Bailey photographs and exclusive clubbiness.
Like its equally trendy sister The Ivy, this venue behind The Ritz pulls in the crowds as much for its fashionable status as its food. The tried-and-tested menu is jazzed up with a few seasonal specials (roast spring deer with salsify and mousseron mushrooms, for example) although most love the place for its comforting retro classics like eggs Benedict and salmon fishcakes with buttered spinach and sorrel sauce.
Those in search of exotic flavours won't be disappointed either: crispy duck and watercress salad, char-grilled octopus with chilli and capers or Thai baked sea bass ought to give your tastebuds a tweak. Vegetarians are well catered for and those with a yearning for nursery puds should be delighted by the prospect of banana sticky toffee pudding or rhubarb crumble with custard. Sunday brunch is a big event in St James's and the well-chosen global wine list is peppered with interesting stuff, including 16 fine selections by the glass.
