Review on The Cherry Tree Inn
Classic charm meets contemporary chic in the revitalised Cherry Tree Inn at Stoke Row, a country pub-with-rooms situated high in the Chilterns, a short drive from Henley on Thames. Fashioned from three flint cottages dating back to the seventeenth century, the Cherry Tree is reaping the benefits of a major facelift: bold colours and modern fittings now blend sympathetically with original flagstone floors, beamed ceilings and fireplaces.
The menu – which is bolstered by blackboard specials, seafood and seasonal game – offers a mix of modern European dishes and each item comes with a 'recommended beer': enjoy a bottle of Leffe Blond with pan-fried skate wing, caper, clam and parsley jus or wash down grilled calf's liver and bacon with a glass of Orval 6.2%. Elsewhere, the kitchen gets to grips with tuna carpaccio with spiced lentil salad, slow-roast Gloucester Old Spot belly pork with smoked back pudding and cider jus, and well-tried desserts like treacle tart or chocolate and cherry pudding. Brakspears ales are on draught and the extensive global wine list includes a dozen selections by the glass.
