Review on Grand Divan - Simpson's in the Strand
Dating back to 1828, Simpson's is a fabled haunt of tourists and anyone else who wants to wallow in all things nostalgically traditional. It's a patriotic English institution that oozes history and heritage.
The Grand Divan is the historic heart of the place, a luxurious oak-panelled room lit by crystal chandeliers with intimate booths and ornate plasterwork. Here the day starts with breakfast, although lunch is the main event.
The food is a world away from fusion and fashion – in fact Simpson's is a temple to the art of roasting meat: silver-domed trolleys are wheeled around the room bearing now-legendary joints of aged Aberdeen Angus beef, lamb and so on. Portions are mighty, but it would be a sin if you missed out on a trip down memory lane for bread-and-butter pudding or treacle sponge.
