Review on The Glass Yard at the National Glass Centre
The Glass Yard serves the needs of visitors to the National Glass Centre, a unique venture in an innovative contemporary building on the north bank of the River Wear.
There are magnificent riverside views from the high-tech, ground-floor restaurant, where you can relax with a cappuccino or tackle a full three-course meal. Start with soup or prawn salad, move on to something robust and wholesome like mixed grill with potato, bean and tomato casserole, pasta bake or braised lamb hock. If you order fish and chips, it could be char-grilled tuna, while lemon chicken might arrive with beetroot chutney and asparagus.
Finish with a hot pud or something like apple flan or chocolate cake with strawberries and Drambuie cream. On Sunday there are roasts and plenty of alternatives for kids.
Although the kitchen is mainly geared up to provide lunches and daytime sustenance, there's live jazz in the evening on the third Friday of each month. A two-course buffet is part of the deal, but you do need to buy a ticket in advance.
