Review on French Table
Eric and Sarah Guignard's delightful (and aptly named) neighbourhood restaurant, the French Table in Surbiton has all the cosiness and congeniality of a French family dining room. The premises is a stylish, glass-fronted shop conversion with a light, welcoming feel, pastel colour schemes and flag floors. Sarah is an engagingly chatty hostess out front, and Eric mans the stoves.
The cooking here is modern, lively and surprisingly sophisticated, but it never goes over-the-top. Ingredients are carefully sourced, ideas make sense and the results look dazzling on the plate.
Lunches are great value and the evening menu offers a range of dishes with French and Mediterranean overtones. To start you might go for ravioli of salmon and crab with leek fondue and saffron sauce or slow-cooked leg of rabbit stuffed with red onion chutney and served with truffle risotto. Follow on with seasonal pot au feu, petit salé of duck with lentils or oven-baked cod with carrot purée, pickled beetroot and port sauce.
Eric's French touch shows in desserts such as dark chocolate soufflé with pistachio ice cream or coffee crème brûlée, and the wine list bristles with inviting bottles from Gallic vineyards and beyond. The Guignards also run The Food Room in Queenstown Road, London SW8.
