Review on The Blue Ball Inn

Tucked away down a narrow lane deep in the Quantock Hills, the Blue Ball is now an impressive complex comprising three huge converted barns with the thatched pub and restaurant located in old coaching stables at the back. The interior is laid out on different levels with a high-pitched roof, log fires, upmarket furnishings and woodwork everywhere.

The kitchen buys locally and just about everything is made in-house. At lunchtime you can get crusty rustic rolls, ploughman's and a few upbeat pub offerings ranging from Thai fishcakes to warm chicken and chorizo salad. Things move up a gear in the evening, with a more ambitious menu of restaurant-style dishes.

You might start with crayfish risotto or chicken liver parfait with red onion marmalade, before moving on to cannon of Triscombe lamb with ratatouille and thyme jus or herb-crusted fillet of halibut with saffron sauce. Finish with Somerset cheeses of something sweet like summer pudding or bitter chocolate tart. Several locally brewed real ales are on handpump and the 100-strong, global wine list has plenty of decent drinking at fair prices.
