Review on The Priory Inn
When Tanya and Dave Kelly took over this old stone hostelry in Prince Charles' adopted home village (Highgrove is just down the road), they wanted it as a family home, a place where their kids could enjoy themselves and visitors could bring their little ones without any trepidation. The Priory is now a family inn 'par excellence', complete with everything from changing facilities to a 'babyccino' machine in the child-friendly coffee bar (for mugs of caffeine-free, creamy milk froth).
The Kellys also brought in two Gary Rhodes-trained chefs to raise the food stakes and give the cooking some modern British zing. The result is a menu that could open with roast beetroot soup or chunky venison terrine with plum chutney, before slow-roast lamb shank with redcurrant sauce and root vegetable mash or grilled duck breast with braised fennel sauce. A wood-fired oven is used for breads, pizzas and some other dishes, while desserts are comforting offerings like treacle tart and caramelised rice pudding with whisky sauce.
Add to that a slate of tip-top wines, locally brewed ales, a sunny patio and even internet terminals, and you have the complete, twenty-first century family package.
