Review on The Crawfish Inn, Sala Thai Restaurant

A Victorian red-brick pub on the Holt to Fakenham road makes an unlikely setting for a genuine Thai restaurant, but Siropas Rangphet and his wife have succeeded in turning this village hostelry into a special mix of Norfolk country inn and ethnic eating house.

The owners get fish from Lowestoft, vegetables from Norwich market and many native ingredients direct from Thailand. This translates into a 70-dish menu that covers all the usual bases from satays and tom yum soup to curries and noodles. Look for bop biat (rice pancakes stuffed with vegetables and glass noodles), Thai roast duck on Chinese leaves with oyster sauce, and moo pa-low (peasant-style, sweet sticky pork). Drink Singha Thai beer or something from the minimal wine list.

Great food; pity about the tasteless decor and appalling lighting.

We visited the restaurant as part of a weekend break in Thursford. On arrival, based on the dated appearance of the restaurant we thought we had made a dreadful mistake. The 'style' lacks any coherence: the bold flower-print wallpaper clashes with the dark traditional 'tartan-style' carpet and cheap oriental wall decorations. The colour of the walls and paper table cloths would be dull in natural light but are made much worse by the appallingly harsh lighting, which comes from several bright light bulbs hanging from the ceiling encased in fussy glass pendants. The glare hurts the eyes and conveys a cold ambiance that is more suited to a police cell than a cosy restaurant.
It was therefore a pleasant surprise to find that the food was terrific: fresh, tasty and lots of it! The starters (prawns in batter and chicken satay) were particularly good. This was the best Thai meal we have had and the service was great with friendly, polite waitresses and waiters.
Sadly I wouldn't go again because of the decor. If the owners had gone for wooden floors, white walls, bright pictures and low lighting this could be a top-class restaurant but in the meantime dimmer switches on the main lights and candles on the tables would make a huge difference.

    Brilliant!

I and my family have visited this quaint little restaurant many times and not once have we been disappointed . We have tried lots of Thai restaurants all over the country and this one is by far the best, helped by the stunning area of Norfolk.
The staff and the owners have always been courteous and friendly and it's always top of our list for things to do on every break we have to Norfolk.

Great Thai restaurant, plenty of choice and cooked to preference to order. Best Thai around Norfolk and reasonably priced

    Lovely food

Me and my boyfriend always come here and the food is always lovely. I've been to a few Thai restaurants in Norwich but they were a disappointment compared to this one.

    Excellent flavours and service

I read the previous review with dismay, but knew of friends who had eaten recently at The Crawfish and had a take-away, so I thought I would try it for myself.

Doing research prior to booking a location for a birthday gathering, my friends and I deliberately chose dishes from right across the menu, from starters, the various mains, vegetarian and sides. Our conclusion, absolutely delicious!

Fresh, good quality, meat, seafood and vegetables. Every dish distinct from the next and bursting with regional Thai flavours. Portion sizes resulted in there being plenty to share and the added complication of needing it all to be gluten-free did not phase the chef at all. Wonderful.

Highly recommended for sit in or take-away (I've booked for my birthday meal with a party of eleven).

The Crawfish/Sala Thai staff were friendly and helpful.

    Do give them a try.
