Review on The Lugger Hotel
Nestling by the water's edge of tiny Portloe harbour, with cliffs rising up on either side, the nautically-titled Lugger started life as a seventeenth-century smugglers' inn. These days, however, things are all above board, and the hotel is currently reaping the benefits of a thorough refit. The plush restaurant makes the most of the location, with tables laid out for al fresco meals on the sea-facing slate terrace.
Fish from the local boats is delivered direct to the kitchen door, and diners are advised to book lobsters 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, the evening menu might commence with hand-dived scallops on pea purée with Chardonnay or tuna spring rolls with sweet chilli salsa ahead of suprême of maize-fed chicken with tagliatelle, beef Wellington with Hermitage jus or monkfish on root vegetables with three pepper sauces.
