Review on Kazan
If you fancy trying a little 'Ottoman indulgence' not far from Victoria station, make tracks for Kazan a cool, modern venue, which combines a fine dining restaurant with a lounge, tea room and 'harem room'. Call in for anything from a healthy meze snack to a full feast throughout the day.
The main dining room looks the business with lovely curved ceilings, a splendid walnut bar and lots of comfortable seats and cushions. The kitchen makes good use of ingredients imported direct from the Anatolian region of Turkey, and the lengthy menu delves into the history and traditions of authentic cuisine.
Hot and cold meze steal the show with mouthwatering specialities like stuffed sardines, 'drunken squid' spiked with vodka, mutabel, deep-fried courgette fritters and the like. To follow, check out the high-protein Ottoman grill, poussin with yoghurt, lemon and chilli or 'hunkar begendi' (slow-cooked lamb with spices served on as bed of smoked, puréed aubergines). Sticky sweets, baklava and stuffed apricots round things off in true Turkish style. There's a new branch in the City, at 34-36 Houndsditch, EC3.
