Review on Quilon Restaurant & Bar
Quilon has been doing its stuff within the confines of the St James' Court, Taj Hotel overlooking Buckingham Gate for more than a decade, and recently picked up a Michelin star for its refined take on South Indian regional cuisine.
The action takes place in three smartly attired, suitably upscale dining rooms tastefully decorated with abstract artwork, a vast exotic mural and luxuriant greenery. It makes a suitably sophisticated setting for Sriram Aylur's cooking, which is rooted in the traditions of Kerala and the Malabar Coast. Seafood and vegetarian specialities dominate the menu, although the flavours are a long way from the street and beach snacks of the region.
Mini masala dosas, marinated grilled scallops with spiced coconut cream and a Keralan seafood broth packed with exotic fruits of the sea are suitably wide-ranging starters, while fish also figures prominently among main courses - witness marinated red mullet rishad (stuffed with tangy shrimps) or crispy fried squid filled with spinach and drizzled with lemon and curry oil dressing. If meat is your thing, try low-cooked lamb curry with pistachios and chillies or pot-roast, chilli-spiked duck breast. Vegetarian options include authentic ways with mangoes, snake gourd, pumpkin, long beans and the like. Finish with bibinca (a traditional Goan dessert).
