Review on Mar i Terra
Occupying the shell of a Victorian pub hard by the railway tracks and Southwark arches, Mar i Terra has been serving up cracking tapas since opening in 2000. The original mirror-backed bar is still intact and the whole place has been decked out with swathes of sanded-down dark wood.
As the name suggests, 'sea and land' get equal billing on the lengthy menu, which is peppered with authentic Spanish ingredients: the 'charcuteria' is imported from a family-owned producer on the Castilla/Estremadura border, for example. Among the other regional treats on offer are espinacas a la catalana (fresh spinach with pine nuts and raisins), chipirones a la vizcaina (baby squid in a garlicky tomato and spring onion sauce) and turron de jijona (a classic soft almond sweetmeat from Alicante served with a glass of Moscatel). Standards such as patatas bravas, tortilla and albondigas fill in the gaps. There is a branch at 17 Air Street, Soho, W1.
