Review on Goodfellows
Adam Fellows gave up the sumptuous elegance of Charlton House Hotel in Shepton Mallet for this fascinating new venture. The premises used to be Ritcher's restaurant, but the interior has been completely transformed with brushed steel, slate and pale green walls; there's also an attractive courtyard at the back.
By day, Goodfellows functions as a casual set up, combining the virtues of a café, deli and fishmongers. It's ideal if you fancy dropping in for coffee and delectable pâtisserie, purchase provisions or check out the piscine haul on the counter at the back.
Seafood is the main business in the high-tech, open-to-view kitchen, and supplies arrive daily from Brixham. For lunch, you can feast on chilled gazpacho with olives and basil, followed by hake with coriander mash and saffron-scented nage. The full menu also has its share of treasures including a warm salad of monkfish with chorizo and rocket or halibut, fennel and salami with a red wine and star anise reduction.
There's a cursory nod to meat eaters with - say - beef fillet with red wine sauce, while desserts are teasing delights such as peach tart or pannacotta with mixed berries and grappa sorbet. The wine list is a neat collection of tasty bottles from around the globe.
