Review on Ye Olde Salutation Inn

This beautifully preserved 500-year-old inn combines a former cider house and an adjoining cottage and it's Herefordshire through and through. Parts of the classic half-timbered frontage remain and the interior still breathes history with its sloping floors, tiny doorways, heavy beams and inglenook fireplaces.

It's been said that the Salutation 'threatens to give the gastropub movement a good name,' and visitors can sample excellent food in the atmospheric lounge bar. The blackboard menu advertises dishes old and new, from French onion soup, braised lamb shank and game casserole to herb-crusted fillet of salmon with spinach and cherry tomato butter sauce.

More formal meals are served in the Oak Room restaurant, where tables are at a premium. Begin with roast breast of wood pigeon or pan-seared Cornish scallops, ahead of oven-baked rack of venison, roast loin of monkfish or sirloin of Hereford beef with saffron mash and wild mushroom sauce. To conclude, try crunchy Seville bread-and-butter pudding with Weobley clotted cream or pineapple tarte Tatin with honey and steam ginger ice cream.

    SALUTATION DISAPOINTMENT

    Salutation - a gesture or utterance made as a greeting or acknowledgment of another's arrival or departure:
    Sadly, this was not our experience. We decided, having recently moved to the county, that we would try your establishment for lunch with a view to bringing future visitors for lunch as we love taking people to Weobley.
    We arrived and stood at the bar for a while and eventually the barman arrived, he ignored us totally and proceeded to pour a couple of drinks. This would not have been a problem had he said hello or I'll be with you in a minute, but to ignore potential customers, how ever busy one may be is inexcusable. After several minute's of no acknowledgment or even eye contact we left, never to return.
    The Salutation Inn definitely doesn't live up to its name. What a shame.

    Our Favourite Place in the United Kingdom

    I love Ye Olde Salutation. It has everything you could want. Great beer, great wines, fantastic food, amazing building, friendly and cheerful staff, lovely open fire, comfortable seating, lovely bedrooms, easy parking, great location in fantastic village, really the centre of the local community. We have stayed about 6 times now, and usually end up remaining an extra day. Stuart is a really genuine and caring host, and an EXCELLENT chef. The food is unbeatable as far as choice and value is concerned (tapas, traditional English (amazing pies), steaks, fish, light meals and snacks through to quality 3 course). Very good quality indeed. Sensible portion sizes. Excellent coffee too! House spirits. Pie and a Pint. Lots to please everybody at a great price. The bed and breakfast accommodation is quirky and very comfortable, with lovely choice of teas, etc. in your room. We haven't been for a while as my husband is not well, which is why my date of visit is a while ago, but it is AMAZING.
