Review on Osteria dell’Angolo
Osteria dell'Angolo is a new venture from restaurateur Claudio Pulze, a swish Italian celebrating the classics of Valdarnese Valley cuisine, and bringing a taste of Tuscany to the streets of Westminster. An exclusive lounge bar with chesterfield-style high-back chairs is just the spot for an aperitif before moving through to the split-level dining room, which boasts clean lines, elegant fittings and a window looking into the kitchen.
Chef Demian Mazzocchi recreates the food of his home region, with a rustic tasting menu inspired by dishes from his 'mamma's' kitchen - think braised salted cod and potato with tomato sauce, tagliatelle with duck stew, and traditional apple cake. There's also a great-value lunch menu offering similar bold flavours (say, pumpkin soup with spinach followed by pan-fried squid with Swiss chard).
The full menu moves into slightly more fashionable territory, with the likes of warm octopus with baby capers, semi-dried tomato and buffalo mozzarella, poached duck breast with celery croquette, artichoke salad, crispy Parmesan and nutmeg, and desserts including zuppa inglese and 'aromatised' doughnuts with jam, Italian-style Chantilly, nutella and black cherry cream. Artisan cheeses are worth ordering and the mighty wine list naturally homes in the byways of Tuscany.
