Review on The Tavern Restaurant & Bar
Nestling at the foot of Croagh Patrick, just outside Westport, the O'Brien's inviting bar/restaurant has built up a loyal following since opening its doors in 1999. The ground-floor bar attracts a family crowd with its children's facilities and straightforward menu of open sandwiches, salads, pasta and the like.
The upstairs restaurant aims higher in the gastronomic stakes and takes full advantage of seafood from nearby Clew Bay. Oysters and mussels are fixtures in season and the kitchen is also renowned for its seafood chowder. Elsewhere, expect Coolenney cheese tartlet with red onion marmalade, grilled organic salmon steak with dill and lemon butter or spicy chicken with roasted peppers, tomato and basil cream. 'Early bird' menus are available throughout the summer, and Sunday lunch is something of a local event.
