Review on The Chequers Inn
In a remote corner of the Chiltern Hundreds nor far from Burnham Beeches, this historic seventeenth-century inn is also close enough to London for lunch or a weekend break in the country. In summer, the attractive garden comes onto its own, and there's a blazing fire in the beamed bar when winter closes in.
For casual meals and a pint of real ale, check out the blackboard bar menu, which spans everything from sandwiches and homemade burgers to slow-roast lamb shank with pesto mash and tuna steak with couscous and tomato salsa.
The smart modern restaurant is a light and airy affair with full length windows looking out onto the greenery. Diners can expect colourful ideas like a timbale of tiger prawns with beetroot and asparagus before red bream with spinach and fennel cannelloni or breast of corn-fed chicken with courgette, sweetcorn and chorizo sauce. Tarte Tatin and praline parfait often feature on the list of desserts, while the wine list is fleshed out with bin ends and affordable choices by the glass.
