Review on Macdonald Bear Hotel
The Macdonald Bear Hotel has been a bastion of good hospitality since the thirteenth century, an ivy-clad coaching inn in Woodstock that has seen more than its fair share of celebrities over the years. Today it still makes a virtue of generous old-fashioned hospitality - even though its oak beams and panelling now compete with state-of-the-art business facilities.
Exposed stone walls, open fires and candlelight create a soothing mood in the smartly appointed restaurant Bear Restaurant. The kitchen works to a classic menu with seasonal additions, and evening meals might commence with ballotine of Shetland organic salmon with caviar and cucumber crème fraîche or 'hand made' Gala pie with pear chutney and pickles. Moving on, choose - say - slow-roast belly pork with onion purée and green peppercorn sauce or baked cod with mustard seeds, thyme and chilled fennel salad before closing with baked Alaska or dark chocolate ravioli with vanilla ice cream. Light meals and afternoon tea are served in the lounge and on the terrace overlooking the grounds.
