Review on Rose & Crown
Impressively transformed from down-at-heel Devon boozer into a fashionable contemporary gastro pub, the Rose & Crown really looks the part. Gone are the trappings of a drinkers' den; in their place are cowhide sofas, Venetian blinds, cream-washed walls and an open-plan bar.
The kitchen works to a cosmopolitan menu with strong modern overtones and a dedication to West Country produce - witness Falmouth Bay scallops with roast cantaloupe melon and coriander pesto or haunch of Exmoor venison on creamed cabbage and root vegetables with bitter chocolate sauce. There are also some forays into the Pacific Rim for, say, seared fillet of sea bass with with sesame noodles, pak choi and lemon beurre noisette. Desserts are equally eclectic, ranging from rhubarb crumble soufflé with custard to lemongrass pannacotta with sesame tuile and Thai basil ice cream.
Outside is a 'secret' walled garden with sculptures on display, a fountain and some glorious plants; beyond is a safe play area for the kids. The Seafood Restaurant directly opposite the pub is part of the same set-up, but has its own kitchen brigade and very different menu.
