Review on 31 Castlegate Restaurant
31 Castlegate Restaurant is located in the heart of York under the shadow of historic Clifford's Tower and a short stroll from the Viking Museum. It is housed in the former home of a Georgian architect and still retains much of the original period features, with wonderful high ceilings and lovely candlelit tables.
Chef Patron is Nick Julius who has earned his culinary stripes at Marco Pierre White's L'Escargot, and Head Chef at Tivoli Cunard Vista Fjord and at Durham Ox, Crayke. Julius has created a menu specialising in modern European cuisine using only the finest local produce available for his seasonal menus. Open your account with carpaccio of 'Holme Farm' venison with pickled girolles, rocket salad and parmesan shavings, before mains of slow roast free range belly of pork cooked in Magners cider with roast parsnip purée and green beans. Some old favourites appear amongst the desserts such as sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and Yorvale vanilla ice cream or a raspberry Eton mess.
