Review on Oxo's Restaurant on the Mount
Mount Royale comprises two beautiful William IV houses, built in 1833 and situated discreetly not far from York city centre. The main restaurant has been re-branded as Oxo's on the Mount, but it still provides lovely views of the gardens and focuses on straightforward modern food with lots of Mediterranean flourishes.
A few old favourites such as Caesar salad with smoked chicken or wild boar sausages and mash are always on the menu; other dishes vary with the market and the season. Typical starters from the long carte might include mussels and king prawns marinière, grilled goats' cheese salad, while main courses could range from fillets of sea bass with Provençal sauce to pan-fried calf's liver with sage, Madeira and bacon sauce. Finish with limoncello and Amaretti torte or strawberries with Grand Marnier ice cream.
