Review on York Pavilion Hotel, Langtons Brasserie
Situated just over a mile from York's historic city walls, this elegant Grade-II listed Georgian country mansion was once the family home of businessman and entrepreneur Xavier Prendergast (who brought the Beatles to York in the 60s). It now plies its trade as an up-to-the-minute hotel/restaurant and conference venue.
Meals are served in the light airy surroundings of Langtons Brasserie, with its wood floors, rattan chairs and picture windows overlooking the grounds. The kitchen makes good use of local and organic produce – as well as fresh fish from the North Yorkshire coast – for contemporary menus with Mediterranean overtones.
You might begin with warm confit of duck with celeriac rémoulade and beetroot jus or grilled goats' cheese with fennel and raisin coleslaw, sun-blush tomato and basil pesto before tackling pan-fried calf's liver with swede purée, Puy lentil jus and grilled pancetta or roast cod with girolles and pea ragoût. To finish, expects desserts such as vanilla mousse with citrus salad.
