Review on Aherne's Townhouse & Restaurant
Aherne's has been in the Fitzgibbon family for three generations and is now a world-famous destination in the equally famous walled seaside resort of Youghal (once the home of St Walter Raleigh). It has acquired an excellent reputation for its surprisingly luxurious townhouse accommodation, but the star turn is seafood fresh from the local boats.
The place boasts two traditionally furnished bars, where you can eat and drink splendidly at any time of day (12.00 - 10.00pm): plates of oysters, prawns and smoked salmon are the big hits., along with seafood chowder, prime Irish beef and sandwiches made with brilliant home-baked bread.
Alternatively, wait until the evening and sample the full works in the romantic restaurant. In addition to plain and simple shellfish and crustacea, the kitchen offers more thoroughly worked dishes like seared scallops with bacon and spinach, grilled John Dory with seafood risotto or Parmesan-crusted cod with spicy tomato sauce. Meat eaters are offered a couple of token alternatives such as roast loin of lamb with char-grilled vegetables. The well-chosen wine list inclines towards France.
