Review on The Duke's Head
The Duke's Head is a delightful pub nestling in the quintessential English village of Hatfield Broad Oak, a former market town mentioned in the Domesday Book, it got its name from the massive Doodle oak in the nearby Hatfield Forest. Bearing all the hallmarks of a country pub with its unassuming white stone exterior, inside it welcomes guests into a spacious cosy setting with flagstone flooring, low beams and two wood fires. Parts of the Duke's Head date back to 1735, exposed brick walls are adorned with pictures, there's chunky wood tables and chairs for dining, and comfy armchairs and leather sofas to relax and enjoy a quiet drink.
This charming establishment is run by by husband and wife team Chef Proprietor Justin Flodman, a former senior sous chef at Marco Pierre White's Mirabelle and Liz who is in charge of the amicable service. Menus run in tandem with the seasons and the kitchen is serious about procuring first-class local ingredients. Expect the likes of slow roast tomato tart tatin, crispy mozzarella, rocket and parmesan, balsamico or Brixham crab brulee, Lavoche crackers and pink grapefruit salad. Among the main courses you might opt for the Duke's Coronation chicken kiev with sag aloo potatoes, bhaji onion and sultana puree or the king prawn spaghetti, smoked bacon, sundried tomato and chilli oil which can also be served as a starter. Make sure you leave room for one of their delicious desserts such as Bailey's cream and chocolate cheesecake, shortbread and chocolate sauce or the Cornish raspberry sorbet and baked doughnuts.
Accompanying the menu is a carefully chosen wine list that keeps its prices in check and offers a decent range by the glass. The Duke's Head is very much at the heart of the local community, but their reputation for good food and excellent hospitality has ensured that it attracts diners from further afield.
