Review on Bar 44
Despite its unassuming location above Tesco Express, Bar 44 in the market town of Cowbridge was crowned the Readers restaurant of the year for Wales by Waitrose Good Food Guide 2015. It's just one of the many awards the Spanish restaurant which opened in 2002 has picked up, alongside its Penarth younger sibling. Climb the stairs to the first-floor dining room which features a mosaic tiled bar, stone flooring, polished wood furnishings and light coloured suede chairs. Masterminded by brothers Tom and Owen Morgan, who have furthered their successful formula by investing in a retro American airstream catering trailer called Bar 44 Street Kitchen, which travels across Wales and the UK visiting markets, festivals and private events.
Tapas don't come any more authentic than this, with the kitchen sourcing impeccable artisan ingredients direct from Spain including whole Serrano and Ibérico Jamóns, charcuterie and farmhouse cheeses. Some of the many tasty offerings on the menu include portobello mushrooms, cauliflower escabeche, parsley, garlic; sea bass, squid, arroz negro, squid alioli; griddled chicken, chorizo braised arrocina beans and mini rose veal burger, duck parfait, served with aubergine ketchup. To finish with something sweet choose apple and turron crumble cheesecake or chocolate mousse and pumpkin ganache.
Children are made very welcome and have their own menu which includes a choice of tapas, served with slow rise bread and home made chips. There's an excellent selection of Spanish wine and sherry to complement the food, together with craft beers and a menu featuring both classic and bespoke cocktails.
