Review on Chiltern Firehouse

The Chiltern Firehouse, a luxurious boutique hotel and restaurant occupies a handsome red brick Grade II listed building built in 1889, originally the Marylebone Fire Station, it was one of the first fire stations in London. Located on historical Chiltern Street which has undergone a three-year regeneration programme transforming it into a specialist shopping destination, it's the first UK venture from acclaimed American hotelier André Balazs, who also owns the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Los Angeles and The Mercer Hotel in New York City.

The restaurant is headed by talented Portuguese chef, Nuno Mendes, who received many awards and plaudits at his previous restaurant Viajante at Bethnal Green Town Hall Hotel, including a prestigious Michelin star. Chiltern Firehouse has certainly proven to be the hottest ticket in town and if you are fortunate enough to secure a table, expect to rub shoulders with the young royals and 'A' list celebs such as Madonna and Kate Moss.

Accessed through a pretty courtyard, the restaurant has been designed by Paris based Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty of Studio KO. There are handsome red fire doors with high handles, exposed brick walls with original fire-fighters markings and filament lights hang from a red and jute upholstered webbed ceiling. Set over two levels, the most prized seats in the dining room are located on the mezzanine, where guests can watch Nuno perform his culinary magic.

Mendes worked for 16 years alongside highly regarded chefs such as such as Wolfgang Puck and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, so diners can look forward to modern American dishes along the lines of crab-stuffed doughnuts or fillets of squab breast with grains, chicory and a trio of redcurrant. Mains include slow-cooked cod with leek hearts and romesco or slow-roasted short rib with hazelnut purée and bone marrow. Close the show with indulgent desserts in the shape of baked pear and dark chocolate tart or frozen apple panna cotta with toasted meringue and a herb granita.
