Review on Chaophraya

Chaophraya, a small chain of Thai restaurants opened its Glasgow branch in July 2012 on the corner of Buchanan Street and Nelson Mandela Place. Europe's largest Thai Restaurant is set in the iconic Townhouse, a building that can trace its history back to 1911 and has had many guises over over its history, including serving as the Liberal Club and the Royal Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Spread over four floors the sumptuous decor has retained many of the original features and fireplaces, with the main restaurant located in the ballroom area.

The 100 dish menu features classic dishes from different regions of Thailand and covers all the standard bases, from soups and salads to curries and noodles, with plenty of possibilities for vegetarians. Stand-out dishes include Massaman lamb shank, braised lamb shank with peanuts, potato and deep fried shallots in a Massaman curry sauce served with grilled pumpkin and broccoli and chargrilled sea bass stuffed with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves with fresh chilli and lime sauce. The well considered global wine list offers ample choice across the range, together with premium beers and zingy Thai cocktails.

For a pre or post aperitif, diners can visit the Palm sugar bar, a stunning room with a luxurious décor featuring a granite bar, magnificent crystal chandeliers and contemporary music.
