Review on Smokehouse
Smokehouse occupies a smart red bricked building on the former site of The House, located in a largely residential area of Islington in North London. Sibling to two other successful pubs owned by Scott Hunter and Maria Larsen, Princess of Shoreditch and The Pig and Butcher a short walk away, they have been joined by barbecue chef supremo, Neil Rankin in their latest venture. The interiors have been updated with clean lines and the large central bar still operates as a local watering hole, with a dining area towards the rear featuring bare wood tables and chairs, overlooked by the small open kitchen.
Rankin who made his name at Pitt Cue Co and John Salt is continuing to wow the crowds with his succulent smoked and grilled meats. Produce is carefully sourced from small independent suppliers and dishes change with the season. The menu kicks off in true style with potted smoked duck leg and toast or maybe opt for the crab, Korean pickled cucumber, sesame and tomato. Main courses pick up on smoked lamb shoulder, polenta, raclette and samba or fish fans will enjoy the Cornish hake, smoked mussels and bacon chowder. Bringing up the rear are desserts in the shape of tarragon and strawberry panna cotta or polenta and orange cake paired with vanilla ice cream.
Europe rules on the wine list, carefully sourced from family owned vineyards and there's an extensive selection of craft beers, hand-pulled ales and non-alcoholic beverages.
