Review on Ognisko
The Ognisko restaurant is set within the Polish Heath Club, that was originally founded in 1940 as a sanctuary for Polish nationals, after the Second World War. It's housed in a very grand terraced Victorian building, that is ideally placed just a stone's throw away from the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Royal Albert Hall and London Imperial College in the heart of South Kensington. The interiors have recently been updated and it all looks eminently chic decked out in pale colours, cornices, columns and sparkling chandeliers, overlooking Princes Gardens.
The kitchen features a light take on traditional Eastern and Central European cuisine along the lines of hot beetroot soup with pasztecik or steak tartar with Quail eggs, gherkins, shallots, capers and herbs amongst the starters. Follow on with Golonka, honey and pomegranate glazed pork shank with sauerkraut and apple salad or fish fans might opt for the roast Hake with salsify, Jerusalem artichoke and pearl barley. To finish there's Sernik, a white chocolate and vanilla cheesecake or crème brulee with vodka cherries.
The wine list brings together some great wines from around the globe, together with a tasty cocktail menu, an extensive vodka list created with fresh fruit, herbs and spices and boutique beers from regional Polish breweries.
