Review on Kurobuta Marble Arch
Award winning Kurobuta restaurant is located in Connaught Village, west of Marble Arch, situated on a small parade of shops in a largely residential area. It has a smaller sibling in trendy Chelsea that started off as a 'pop-up' before eventually became a permanent fixture due to its popularity. These critically acclaimed restaurants by critics and foodies alike were originally the inspiration of Australian chef Scott Hallsworth, a former Head Chef of Nobu in London and Melbourne for a number of years, but he sold them in 2017. Occupying a vast space, the light and airy restaurant has filament lights hanging from the ceiling, with the open-to-view kitchen taking centre stage. The restaurant has a buzzy atmosphere with small tables, many available for communal dining.
The food is designed to be a modern take on the Izakaya, a Japanese pub that serves food to accompany the drinks. The menu is divided into sharing dishes under the headings of Snacks, Cold-Raw-Salad, Robata BBQ, Japanese Junk Food, Something Crunchy, Significant Others and Maki. Typical offerings on the carte include Beef Fillet Tataki with Onion Ponzu and Garlic Crisps; Miso Grilled Baby Chicken with Spicy Lemon Garlic Sauce; Tuna Sashimi Pizza with Truffle Ponzu, Red Onions and Green Chillies; Jerusalem Artichoke Chopsticks with Truffle Ponzu Dip; Kombu Roasted Chilean Seabass with Spicy Shiso Ponzu and Diver Scallop with Ginger and Black Bean.
Knowledgeable staff, a pleasant buzz with New World wines, saké based cocktails, together with Kirin Frozen Head beer to accompany the dishes makes Kurobuta hit all the right notes.
