Review on The Kings Head

Formerly a Shearings hotel that closed in 1997, The Kings Head situated in the market town of Cirencester in East Gloucestershire has undergone a multi-million pound renovation programme, which has seen it reopen as a luxury boutique hotel. Once a coaching inn, this Grade II-listed building can trace its history back to the middle of the fourteenth century and is now managed by Bespoke Hotels on behalf of property developer Mark Booth, owner of Wildmoor Properties.

The hotel not only has top-class facilities, but the bonus of a stylish, contemporary brasserie style restaurant that combines informality with a touch of class. It has a cosy dark wood interior with the hustle and bustle of the open kitchen, simple weathered oak tables, chairs covered with tan faux leather seating pads, together with velvet banquette seating. Exposed brick walls display an interesting photo montage sourced from local artists. There's an atmospheric vaulted cellar featuring a glass-walled wine display that is used for private dinner parties for 8-16 guests.

The kitchen makes excellent use of the abundant supplies from local producers with Black Angus award winning steaks cooked on the Robata grill. As a starter opt for the chicken liver parfait served with red onion marmalade and brioche or maybe the scallop, cauliflower and bone marrow. When it comes to main courses there's dishes in the shape of venison loin, celeriac, pomme Anna, kale and juniper or from the sea monkfish wrapped in pancetta, butternut squash, lentils, and coriander. Close the show with desserts such as peanut butter brulee and shortbread or a dark chocolate marquis with orange sorbet and orange pate de fruit.

Polished service is accompanied by a wine list of over 120 bins from all corners of the globe, including ten available by the glass and there's also a well crafted cocktail menu. The Kings Head has 45 stylish bedrooms available should you wish to extend your stay and explore all that the area has on offer.
