Review on The Conservatory Restaurant at Audley Woods
Standing amid seven acres of greenery, Audley Woods, part of the Hand Picked collection of Hotels started life as a charming manor house built in the 1880's for Thomas Pain. Located just a short drive from Basingstoke Railway Station and a 20 minute drive from the historical city of Winchester and Newbury Racecourse, the hotel welcomes guests with first-class facilities with the addition of its signature restaurant established in 2011, called The Conservatory Room. The elegant room has many period features such as the magnificent oak-panelled carved walls, reputedly from Tewkesbury Abbey, an open fireplace, a high white sculptured ceiling and large windows overlooking the landscaped gardens.
The restaurant holds two prestigious AA Rosettes, showcasing an a la carte menu alongside a tasting menu which celebrates the very best produce that Hampshire has to offer. Open your account with suckling pig, piccalilli, shimeji mushrooms and cracking or from the sea there's Cornish crab, cucumber, black bean and caviar. Main courses pick up on guinea fowl, truffle, figs, pancetta, lemon and leeks or stone bass, cauliflower, tapioca, caper, raisin and romanesco. Desserts close the show with a cinnamon creme, apple, shortbread and honeycomb or parfait, banana, chocolate and walnuts.
Accompanying the menu is a quality wine list from both the New and Old World wine regions, together with a carefully crafted cocktail list. Audley Woods has elegantly appointed rooms should you wish to stay over.
