Review on Marco Pierre White Wheeler's Rib Room & Oyster Bar
Set in the financial heart of the City in the space formerly occupied by Bonds, Marco Pierre White Wheeler's Rib Room and Oyster Bar is the new showpiece restaurant of the Threadneedles Hotel, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection of luxury hotels. The dining room pays homage to the building's heritage with its high ornate corniced ceiling and tall Victorian windows with intricate exterior iron shutters. Crystal chandeliers twinkle overhead, it's a smart affair with candlelit tables laid with crisp white linen and contrasting luxurious red leather banquette seating and chairs featuring a bull's nose ring on the back.
Marco has devised a menu of seafood favourites together with grill classics and has appointed Alex Tyndall to take the helm of the kitchen. Expect the likes of smoked mackerel brandade served with fresh horseradish and melba toast or black pig balls and paprika mayonnaise amongst the starters. Main courses feature a fine selection of Angus steaks alongside dishes such as the Classic Wheeler's fish pie and buttered garden peas or coq and shrimp curry, fresh mango, ginger and buttered rice. When it comes to desserts Cambridge burnt cream with shortbread is a popular choice or you could opt for the baked cheesecake with a passion fruit sauce.
For more informal dining head for the the adjoining bar with its regularly changing blackboard menu. There's a comprehensive wine list and cocktail menu, together with bottled beers and an all malt British beer and cider created by Pierre White and JW Lees at the Greengate Brewer.
